St John’s Catholic School Kindergarten is staffed by four Educators, two qualified Teachers and two Teacher Aides.  There are two Kindergarten groups: Kinder Red on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Kinder Blue on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.  Both groups join together on Wednesdays and partake in specialist lessons in Music and Movement, Sport, a Perceptual Motor Program (P.M.P) to develop auditory, visual, motor, memory, language and social skills, and a Digital Technology program. Library visits are offered on a weekly basis, in addition to daily outdoor play and nature-based exploration in our dedicated Kindergarten play space.

We develop our learning program in line with the national Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), Belonging, Being and Becoming.  Investigation, exploration and discovery are at the heart of our child-centred program, inspiring a sense of awe and wonder about our world and the local community, including our Church.  Children are naturally curious and capable learners, and we are responsive to opportunities for spontaneous learning experiences, while actively teaching concepts and skills to develop a greater understanding of and respect for the world in which our children belong.

Our Kindergarten students participate in whole school activities, such as Assemblies, Liturgies, Sports Carnivals and school-based fundraising efforts.  This interaction and participation in the life of our school enables the students to build a strong sense of belonging to the community.  Excursions and Incursions are an important part of our program, to further explore children’s interests and ideas.

Prior to commencing Kindergarten, we offer the opportunity to attend Pre-Kinder sessions.  This is a comprehensive program, staffed by our Kindergarten Educators, and spanning twelve weeks: six weeks of parents’ accompaniment and six weeks of independent attendance. Pre-Kinder operates in Terms Three and Four of the year prior to entering Kindergarten, (from August to November). By accessing this program, our Pre-Kinder children can become familiar with our Kindergarten classroom, resources and routines,  explore the school environment, get to know their classmates, participate in Library sessions and large equipment play, and begin to understand the way a school works. The program offers families the opportunity  to learn about our school community,  meet other parents, staff of the school, and members of our extended St. John’s family. Experience has shown us that children who have participated in our Pre-Kinder sessions enter Kindergarten confidently, with less separation anxiety, and with a very valuable sense of belonging to their new school.

Welcome to Prep where we are building a love of learning!
In Prep Purple (Prep Red and Prep Blue together) we aim to create respectful listeners and learners in a fun and inclusive environment.  We encourage our students to explore, investigate and question.  We love learning to read, write and count!  We aim to foster a growth mindset where we seek to challenge ourselves and learn from our mistakes, as well as creating individuals who will have a go and work well with others.  Preps are given the opportunity to learn through songs, games, hands-on activities and most importantly, play.  In Prep Purple we learn about God’s love and the Spirit of Jesus by showing kindness and loving one another.

In 1/2 Red we are eager to learn.

We experiment, try new things, question, we wonder at the world around us and collaborate with our classmates as a team of learners.

We are respectful. We care about our classmates and all members of the school community. We value positive relationships and enjoy supporting and helping one another.

We are developing our initiative, and our independence as we take responsibility for our actions and set our learning goals.

We are risk takers and understand that making mistakes is part of learning.

We have fun.

In 3/4 Red we are doing our best to be mindful, independent learners. We are learning to use our initiative; monitor our own learning, and ask questions when we are unsure of what to do. Our focus, is to take on board constructive feedback and challenge ourselves in our learning. We aim to communicate effectively and to work with each other co operatively.  In our class we are learning to be WEST people.  WEST stands for Welcoming, Encouraging, saying Sorry and saying Thank you.

We’ve had a wonderful start to the school year and we’re looking forward to working hard in order to achieve our goals.

3/4 Blue has started the year off extremely well. We are a very creative and curious group of learners; we thoroughly enjoy class discussions and tackling big ideas. We are learning to listen well so that we can explore new ideas in greater depth. Additionally, we are learning to develop respect for different perspectives.

We are practising persistence and independence. We understand that our attitude determines whether we are successful or not. Our big goals are to be positive and productive people – in the classroom, yard and at home.

Welcome to 3/4 WHITE where ‘Together We Unite!’

Being in 3/4 White means trying to be the best possible learner and person you can possibly be!

To do this, 3/4 White aim to follow these three important values:

  • We are Respectful
  • We are Responsible
  • We are Learners!

If we follow these guidelines, our days will be happy, calm, productive and full of kindness. In 3/4 White we know the importance of making mistakes and persevering when learning gets tough. We know all about the brain science behind making mistakes and how good mistakes are for brain growth. Thinking and learning can be hard work, but with lots of persistence and a positive attitude, you will certainly get there in the end.

If you are lucky enough to be in 3/4 White you will get to enjoy singing, engage in creative art activities, listen to exciting stories and work together to solve difficult maths questions. We like to work together to create presentations using technology and Google classroom has been an interesting way to submit our work this year.

Children in 3/4 White are always on the look out for ways to earn Dojo points and we celebrate each others’ success.

In this wonderful class of 5/6 Red we are growing and learning. If the playground at SJCS is a river jungle then our class piranhas watch over our work every day and monitor our responsible, respectful and learning behaviours. We loved naming our fish. We also love seeing our Prep friends for reading, taking out classes for PE, and are getting better at asking questions about what is important in life. We like to write songs. Some of the animals we would like to be in our imaginary world could be owls, spiders, praying mantises, dugongs, bulls, peregrine falcons, monkeys, flamingos and King Kong.

In 2018, 5/6 Red are growing with our school values and trying to care for others as we are cared for.

Welcome to 5/6 Blue! We have had a wonderful start to the year and have set personal, classroom and whole school goals which are challenging, but achievable. We try hard to be respectful, responsible learners and to follow our school motto” Love one another as I have loved you,” in all areas of school life. We are working towards becoming independent learners and we try to embrace all learning opportunities. We look out for our classmates and aim to be positive role models in our school community.

We are on a journey of learning together, and look forward to all the challenges that come our way this year as we prepare for high school.

Welcome to 5/6 White!

We have had a lovely start to the year.  In Grade 5/6 our aim is to be respectful, responsible learners, and positive role models for the rest of the school.  We are learning to be good leaders and independent workers in preparation for high school.  We try our best in all we do and we understand that when we make mistakes it is a chance to learn.  We look forward to sharing the rest of the year together.
